Domestic violence can also be known as domestic abuse. Domestic abuse can be physical, emotional/ psychological, sexual or financial. Anyone can be a victim of domestic abuse it can happen between people who are in or have been in a relationship, friendships or by a family member. There is no single reason why domestic abuse occurs. It can be a combination of factors including social attitudes, community responses and the individual psychological experiences of the abuser and the person being abused.
Tomorrow's Women Wirral (TWW) in partnership with Wirral Connect funded by the CSP have been piloting a peer mentoring project to support women who may want to disclose domestic abuse in a less formal way.
Our peer mentoring training started in February 2016 and we ahve just completed our 4th and final group for this year. The response has been overwhelming with women wanting to gain a qualification to give back.
The peer mentoring training is 8weeks of one full day a week of class based learning. This 8 week course is fully accredited which will result in the women completing the course with a level 2 qualification in Peer Mentoring.
TWW now has Domestic Abuse Mentors based within our centre to offer a listening ear and support to any women who discloses domestic abuse. All support will be confidential and given at a pace the women feels comfortable with. This project is about supporting women in the earlier stages of domestic abuse before it gets to crisis point. It is about listening to the women's needs, wants and giving them the correct support to ensure they are happy.
The Project Coordinator of this pilot is Becky who can be contact via TWW on 0151 647 7907.
